May 5, 1995

We have recently received the following announcement from one of our Exhibitors... "Digital Instruments and Systems for Research Corp. are pleased to extend an open invitation to Surface Canada'95 attendees to come and see Digital Instrument's world class AFM NanoScope IIIa multimode Microscope. Participants are encouraged to bring their samples (up to 15 mm in dia.) to be run on the NanoScope. Due to the expected interest in the NanoScope IIIa, we strongly recommend interested individuals with samples to contact Art or Mark Priebe at 1-800-565-8068 or Fax 613-832-4102 prior to the beginning of the Conference. -- Art Priebe, Systems for Research"

At this time, we are pleased to report that Surface Canada '95 is going to be one of the largest Surface Canada meetings in recent past. We have over 150 participants, with 74 contributed papers (posters) and 42 talks. To accommodate the large turnout, we have to run two parallel sessions for the Hot Topics (where this year's Hobson prize winners will be selected). In addition to the long list of impressive invited speakers from both Canada and overseas, we also have three plenary talks (instead of the nominal one in past Surface Canada meetings), which will be given by Dr. Charles Duke (Xerox), Professor Gabor Somorjai (Berkeley), and Dr. Franz Himpsel (IBM). The main event of this year's meeting is of course the Special Symposium to celebrate the 25th birthday of Progress in Surface Science. My colleague and editor of this important journal, Professor Syd Davison, will chair this session and indeed an exceptional list of speakers has been arranged.

The Final Announcement and Program has been mailed out to all the registrants. I wish to take this opportunity to remind those who submitted "faxed" copies of the abstracts to send us the "good" camera-ready copies as soon as possible. The faxed copies are not of sufficient quality for reproduction purposes. We have also included in the mailing package an order form for Commemorative T-shirt, which will not be available anywhere else. We are fortunate enough to be given the permission to use Peter Aliknak's Devil Fishes artwork as the conference logo. Syd will explain why we choose this particular artwork as the logo during the conference.

In summary, I look forward to meeting all of you soon. If you have any question, please don't hesitate to contact me.

A short note to remind you to send in your abstracts. We wish to keep a "firm" deadline for the abstracts, which are due on March 24, 1995. This will give us about two weeks to configure the program and mail it out to the participants. Please send in two copies of the one-page camera-ready abstract. The format for the abstract is given in the second announcement.

If you have not done so already, I wish to remind you to register for the upcoming Surface Canada meeting, to be held at Waterloo on May 25-27, 1995. We have extended the registration deadline to March 17 and are still accepting the registration at the " regular" rates. We and the Division of Surface Science need your support, so please send yourself and/or your group. I believe the younger members (postdoc's and graduate students) of our Division will benefit from meeting some of the big men in Surface Science featured in this meeting.

I look forward to meeting you at Waterloo in May and to learning more about your research area.
