Pityopsis graminifolia (Michx.)
Small The most common and widely distributed species of the genus occurring from Delaware and southern Ohio to Texas and south Florida. One variety also occurs in Central America. Semple and Bowers (1985) divided the species into five varieties based on leaf and pubescence traits. Var. graminifolia has glandular heads and occurs on the outer coastal plain from North Carolina to eastern Louisiana. Var. aequilifolia Bowers & Semple and var. tracyi (Small) Semple occur in peninsula Florida. Var. tenuifolia (Torr.) Semple & Bowers and var. latifolia (Fern.) Semple & Bowers occur throughout much of the range of the species; the latter also occurs in Guatemala and adjacent Mexico and Honduras in Central America. Last update 23 October 2005 by J.C.
