Eric Fillion received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at the Universite de Sherbrooke. After completing his M. Sc. in medicinal chemistry at the Université de Montreal with Professor Denis Gravel, he began his doctoral studies in 1994 at the University of Toronto under the direction of Professor Mark Lautens. He was involved in the synthesis of bridged polyoxacyclic ring systems and studied their sequential ring opening for the preparation of highly functionalized decalin systems. From 1998-2000, he was an NSERC post-doctoral fellow in the laboratories of Professor Larry E. Overman at the University of California, Irvine working on the total synthesis of manzamine A. In August 2000, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo and initiated a research program in organometallic chemistry.
