Lo Chia-luen: Rendezvous

Ms. Liang sent me a song by Lo Chia-luen entitled Rendezvous, written and published in February, 1945. The song celebrates the feelings of joy felt by the embattled Chinese who had been fighting the Japanese invaders for almost eight years. On January 27, 1945, the New First Army, led by General Sun Li-jen from Burma, rendezvoused with soldiers from Yunnan, China. The event was a landmark victory in the war of resistance in the Allied War Theater in Southeast Asia.

The song is to be sung by a chorus divided into two groups, one representing the Chinese expedition troops from the south (Burma), and the other, the Chinese forces sent from the north (Yunnan). The first group sings in a defiant mood as it fights its way towards the China-Burma border. Then the second group sings triumphantly as it marches southward to meet with its counterpart from the opposite side. Finally both groups join together in a dramatic finale as they rendezvous on the border.

Rendezvous
Group 1 sings

Over the mighty Hump we flew,
Completely armed and equipped
. At Ramgarh, India, our unit is in formation,
And our spirits are high.
Sons of China, strong in body,
Battle in the rain, tragically heroic;
Artillery fire lights up the sky like rainbows.
Treading the footprints of giant elephants,
We interrupt the cries of howling monkeys.
After retaking Magaung, the Huguan Valley,
We occupy the Myitkyna airport.
Following the bugle call for advance,
We charge toward the border of our Motherland!

Group 2 sings

We cross the swift-flowing Nu River,
Our uniforms are soaked.
The snow-capped Gaoligong Mountains,
Their brightness is reflected on our bayonets.
Sons of china, strong in body,
In formations like wild geese,
We hold high our flags that reach the clouds.
Discovering the hideouts of the enemy,
We crack the secret of their maneuvers.
Tengchong is recaptured, so is Longling,
Now we are dashing to the bank of the Ruili River.
Following the bugle call for advance,
We charge toward the border of our Motherland!

Together

Flames are everywhere;
Planes fill the sky.
Look!
There is still fire behind enemy lines.
Listen!
There is sound of guns too.
Suddenly, the enemy forces collapse,
Like homeless dogs,
And wolves that have strayed from their pack.
Tattered Japanese flags of the rising sun
And their dead soldiers litter the battle field!
Our tears roll down like rain;
Our hearts pound out of control;
With no time to put down our weapons,
Our brethren-in-arms,
Let us warmly embrace!
We embrace on the border between China and Burma!
