Ge Shuya, Chinese History Expert

Ge Shuya corresponded with Alain de Frahan, and I learned of him through Alain's correspondence. I began to contact him by writing: Dear Shuya,

Alain forwarded some correspondence you had with him to me and I just want to get to know you. I am a foster son of the late General Sun Li-Jen, who led the New 38th D and later the New First Army (38th and 202 Ds) and recaptured Burma with Gen. Stilwell and others.

Mr Ge Shuya's reply

Mr. Ge does not use English often, but he made a great effort to reply in English. Chieh is deeply moved by his letter.

Mr Ge Shuya is perhaps involved with a magzine called The Human Geography of China and this link requires your web browser to read Chinese, I think.

I have been suprised to receive your letter from my worshipful great Gen. Sun Li-Jen's son. I'm a free-lancer for the history of Chinese troops and American troops including ACT in Burma and Yunnan of CBI Theater in the War. I have studied it more than 15 years from 1985. I have visited all of the battlefields and places concerned many times in Yunnan. Now, I and a magazine and others make a plan to return the Ledo Road and Assam and Ramghar in Yunnan. As you know, it is very difficult to visit these important battlefiends in which Chinese National Army fought in foreign for Chinese are controled by CCP. But it doesn't matter, I have studied how to get my dream since 1985. As speciality expert, it is my aim to study and touch with my hands and see with my fresh eyes these battle fields and the Ledo/Burma Road ruins through the historical materials. Do you understand, my interesting is the historical ruins and the oral history than the materials and books. So I must study all paper documents. I have more books and materials about your father from the Chinese Continent, Taiwan, and America with Chinese and English, and but all of them aren't far-between and costful. I have study all experience, especially in Burma. I, too, know that his inequitable state by Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan. Mr. Zhou Lang-pei, a Chinese Yunnan writer and my friend had visited your father in Taiwan. It is said that it is the last guest whom your father met with before gone. I have got some information about your father in Burma and India from some veterans when I have visited them. But I don't visited the veterans from ND 38th or NA 1st besides only one, because your father's soldiers have gone to Manchuria or Taiwan and not to live in Yunnan. Now I have studies every battles including small foughts and including the information from American troop "Merrill's Marauders" and D 18 from Japanese from Ledo to Namhkam along the Ledo Road. So I must touch with my hands the battle ruins and walk with my food on the Road as I have done on Yunnan and Burma Road.

On my thoughts, yur father is an unique great general in Chinese troops or including Communist troops or in Chinese military history on 2000 years. Your father's thoughts and experience is special and important one for Chinese military or Chinese way how to walk and where to go for yesterday and today, but it is very sorry that Chinese don't notice him more much whether from Kuomintang or Communist.

It is that your father wasn't like all Chinese generals on Chinese old tradition and culture. He was like a West general on their advanced thoughts, technique and modern military skills. So his soldiers's (ND 38th) victory was more more than all other Chinese troops' got. He had made a great revolution in Chinese military history. All words above have been approved by American, British and Japanese. Today, I don't know any Chinese general get more than your father on these fields above. We need more these great person as your father.

I'm very glad to know you and contact with you for ever. I, too, know all of youself. I will give more matierls in Chinese if you could read. I hope to know more about your father especially in Burma and India from you. And we need to get some good advice or help from you on our return Ledo Road.

Chieh's reply

I am deeply moved by your reply, and I certainly would like to know you more, and perhaps cooperate with you in the future to get the stories about General Sun out.

Sorry I am writing in English to you, because I am limited by my computer and my ability to input Chinese. However, I can read Chinese e-mails.

I am in the process of building an English Internet site with stories of Gen. Sun, and you may take a look at the URL: http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~cchieh/sun/

You probably will find it interesting too. I have put your e-mail to me on the website already, because knowing you is very important to me and perhaps to the future of our working together. I too also dreamt of going to visit the battle fields General Sun has been. So I am building up my physical strength up for it. May be, some day I will.

I am still very busy, otherwise, I would have written much more on the website. I have many titles, but not much written yet.

Thank you for your reply. You have brightened my day!
