The New First Army

The New 38th Division commanded by General Sun and the 22nd Division commanded by General Liao withdrew to India from Burma in the first phase of the war. With fresh recruit added to these divisions, they were trained in Ramgarh, India.

Following the training with supplies provided by the United States of America under the command of General Stilwell, the two Divisions were combined as the New First Army, first commanded by General Chieu Ching-chun for a very short time, and then replaced by General Cheng Tung-Kuo. General Sun Li-Jen served as the Deputy Commander, but he was the actual leader. As soon as the Burma Recapture mission started, General Sun became the Commander.
