You start learning chemistry by having a keen observation, and when you want to observe under a set of controlled conditions, you experiment. The skill acquired during experiment enable you to find jobs, but more importantly you the chemistry you have learned becomes part of you.
The skills to develop outlined above are rather involving. If you have done them right, you will be a very successful scientist. You may even become famous.
Never perform experiment by simply following the manual as if you are following a recipe in cooking without thinking what is the purpose of each step. Well, do try to understand everything you do in the lab.
At some time later, you should design experiments to find out if some theory is true. One way or another, you win!!
Don't you wish you do well in the lab?
Well, if you do, visit here often. Open for suggestion for an interesting experiment to be placed here for everyone to experiment later.

If your answer is...I'm lost!
For students, experiment is to learn various techniques as well as learning some theory.
If your answer is...to learn lab technique and science
You'll do well.
