Suggestion for Essay Writing
Ask Questions First
In any project, it is important to ask some questions first.
You do not need to know the answers for these questions.
You can always find the answer one way or another after you have questions.
Research is looking for information to answer some fundamental questions.
Why the subject is interesting, to me and to others? (Introduction)
For a story such as a discovery, why is the story inspiring or worth telling?
What was the background for the story?
If it is a discovery, what are the motives, scientific methods, results, implications, and importance?
What makes this substance interesting?
How is the structure related to some of the properties that are worth mentioning?
What are the relationship among structure, properties, importance and applications?
What quantities related to this substance are interesting, production, consumption, economics, market, ...? These quantities can be personal, local, national, world, global or universal.
How is the intended chemistry, physics, or science in this course related to the subject matter or presentation?
Do I know the subject matter well to claim an expert?
There are many styles of essay and the following suggestions are made up
to guide you in scientific essays. An essay is a nice piece of artwork
you have put together so that you and perhaps someone else will
appreciate. It is not a report of what you have found in literature,
or a report of what you have learned.
Have a theme and introduce the theme in the opening paragraph or Introduction
Design a structure using subtitles to develop your theme and stay focused
Find information that fit your theme and structure
Discard 99% of the information you have found and use only the suitable
Dig deeper and provide details for things related to your theme
Search for more to support your theme
Re-interpret the information, not simply transfer the information word by word
Avoid information that you do not understand
Use terms you have learned in General Chemistry without further explanation
and replace terms in literature using appropriate terms for people of this
Use what you have learned in this and other courses to asses the literature
Think of the purpose and audience of the literature you have found
No need to give reference for very common information
References are given to show the credit and credibility of the information,
not to show where you find it.
Make the essay interesting
Write effective statements and elegant sentences
Proofread and find a proofreader if you can
