Industrial Applications and Economics:

Titanium is used in many industrial applications.  Titanium is as strong as steel, but 45% lighter. It is 60% heavier than aluminum, but twice as strong.  The first main consumer of Titanium was the Aerospace industry, however it is now widely used in the production of paper, plastics, and paint.

Titanium is used for two basic reasons: structural efficiency and corrosion resistance.  Unfortunately the benifits of Titanium are often outwayed by it's high production costs.  Producing Titanium in a usable form is energy, labour and capitol intensive due to it's high level of reactivity when red hot.  Special procedures must be used during fabrication which increase cost.

The cost of titanium metal powder (99.95%) is approximately $100/lb.
